To the One Still Carrying Yesterday Finding Your Path to Healing and Hope
By Grace Kasiva Sat, Mar 22, 2025

Being young is an incredible experience. You have the energy to chase dreams, explore new opportunities, and shape your future. Most importantly, you have time—or at least, that’s what it feels like. Young adulthood often carries the illusion that there’s always tomorrow, always another chance to achieve more. But life doesn’t always work that way. One moment, you're making plans, learning new skills, and striving for the next level; the next, everything can change in an instant. This realisation brings us to a powerful truth: the only time we truly have is the present.

Yet, even though the present is all we have, a lot of people—maybe even you—find themselves stuck in the past. The tricky part? Some don’t even realise it. Others do, but breaking free feels impossible. The past, no matter how painful, can feel like a “comfort zone” simply because it’s familiar. And let’s be real—familiar things feel safe. They’re predictable.

How the Past Shapes Our Mindset

Think about it—if you grew up in an environment where people constantly put you down, you might start doing the same to yourself without even noticing. If someone compliments you, you might brush it off or joke about it because kindness doesn’t feel normal to you. It’s not that you don’t want to believe in yourself—it’s just that you’ve been wired to expect something different.

But what if you break free? What if the life you’ve always known isn’t the only one that’s possible?

Healing is a beautiful mess—chaotic, uncomfortable, and yet, so deeply freeing. It’s a journey that asks for patience, reflection, and a whole lot of courage. Some days, it feels like nothing is changing. Other days, it feels like everything is. Shame, guilt, anger, joy, peace—they all come and go, never in a straight line.

But then, one day, something shifts. The weight you’ve carried starts to feel lighter. Your relationships become deeper, healthier, more meaningful. You begin to meet yourself—the real you, the one who was buried under all the pain and survival. And for the first time, you realise that healing isn’t about becoming someone new. It’s about returning to who you were before the world told you who to be.

So, how do you begin this journey?

1. Acknowledge Your Pain

Healing starts with honesty. You can’t move forward if you’re pretending the past didn’t hurt you. Sit with your feelings, name them, and allow yourself to be real about what you’ve been through. Ask yourself: What am I still carrying that no longer serves me?

2. Challenge the Narrative You’ve Been Given

Just because you were treated a certain way doesn’t mean you deserved it. The words spoken over you in the past don’t have to define your future. It’s time to rewrite the script.

✅ I am more than what happened to me.

3. Be Kind to Yourself

You wouldn’t judge a friend for struggling—so why do it to yourself? Healing isn’t linear, and setbacks don’t mean failure. Speak to yourself the way you would speak to someone you love.

4. Surround Yourself with Safe People

Find people who see the best in you, who challenge you to grow, and who love you without conditions. Let go of relationships that keep you stuck in old wounds. You deserve healthy love and support.

5. Take Small Steps Toward the Life You Want

Healing isn’t about one big breakthrough—it’s about the small, daily choices to show up for yourself. Try therapy, journaling, mindfulness, or simply taking deep breaths when overwhelmed.

💡 Ask yourself: What is one small thing I can do today to take care of myself?

6. Allow Yourself to Feel Joy Again

You are not betraying your past by choosing happiness. Healing isn’t just about removing pain—it’s about making space for love, laughter, and joy.

💚 You are allowed to heal. You are allowed to be happy.

Final Thoughts: The Future is Yours

Healing is possible. Breaking free is possible. And most importantly, you are capable of it. One small step at a time, you can create a new reality—one that isn’t ruled by the past but is instead built on hope, growth, and self-love.

The journey won’t always be easy, but it will always be worth it.
